Workshop: Texturing Hammer Carving

Course Description

In this workshop, you will learn how to design and create your unique texturing hammers by carving with small burs and tiny diamond cutting discs. Specific designs can be drawn and replicated by carving, or textures can be random and unorganized. You will learn how to heat-treat the hammers and set them in handles. If time allows, we can also explore hot stamping to create texture.

*Special materials needed for this workshop; please see the information below.

What You Will Learn

Students will have the satisfaction of learning how to design and create their own customized tools by carving blank NC Black hammerheads, rather than relying on commercially made, generic texturing hammers. Their hammers will look like no others.

Special Accommodations

Due to continued risk of COVID-19 infection, the Norman Firehouse Art Center will be implementing a mandatory mask policy for faculty and all students enrolling in and attending classes during the fall semester. Disposable masks will be provided for those who forget their masks. The building will remain closed to the public. Please use the West entrance, which is the door closest to the tennis courts. We ask that you arrive at the door 5 minutes before the class. Hand sanitizer will be provided at the door and temperature checks will be performed before entry.

Materials

What you need: Blank hammerheads should be ordered from NC Black. They will sell kits that contain two blank round and two blank square hammerheads, four handles, and the necessary wedges for setting the finished heads, plus a chunk of polishing compound. The hammer blanks will give you a total of eight blank hammer faces. Kits will cost $80. Or you can purchase individual hammerheads for $15 for each round blank or $25 for each square blank. (Square blanks have one square face and one cross peen face.) A handle and wedges will come with each individual purchase. ALL HAMMERS, WHETHER INDIVIDUAL OR IN KITS, MUST BE ORDERED AT LEAST TWO WEEKS BEFORE START OF WORKSHOP (No later than November 13).

These are all handmade, and they need time!

You will also need A FLEXIBLE SHAFT MACHINE. The Firehouse Art Center will have three, possibly four available. If you have your own, bring it. It is essential. A materials fee will provide the diamond cutting discs and carbide burs that you will need. Bring if you have: a bench vise, drill press vise, or engraver's block (useful for stabilizing the hammerhead if necessary), round chainsaw files, old triangular files, etc., as some marks and material removal, can be accomplished by filing. A good mask, there is a mandatory mask policy in place for the Firehouse. Work gloves to protect your hands and eye protection.
