Current Class Schedule & Information

Healing Studio meets Fridays, from 2:00-4:00 PM.

Summer Semester: Begins Friday, June 5

The Healing Studio is a supportive classroom environment for individuals with varying degrees of cognitive, physical, and learning disabilities to experiment with the creative process through self-expression. The Healing Studio operates as an open studio; instruction and activities are individualized and non-stressful. Each weekly session introduces new art materials and principles, art history, methods of expression, and idea development. Projects are tailored to each individual, allowing them to focus on one project or experiment with different techniques during each session.

Healing Studio Exhibition

Every year, the Firehouse Gallery hosts an exhibition featuring the work of Healing Studio participants, an experience that has become incredibly important for the validation of the students, both as artists and as valued members of society. This is the program’s biggest source of community support, with gallery attendees providing encouragement and recognition to the artists, while experiencing art as a fundamental expression of health and diversity.

Healing Outreach

Healing Outreach functions as an extension of the Healing Studio, providing art instruction to individuals at assisted living centers. To schedule, please email our Studio and Programs, Casey Gilman, at casey@normanfirehouse.com.

Details about our Healing / Expressive Arts / Community Art

Healing, expressive, and community-based art programs at the Firehouse Art Center expand the idea of what an art class can be. Rather than focusing on a single discipline, these programs introduce participants to a variety of mediums—ranging from painting and drawing to ceramics, fiber, and mixed media—within a supportive, nontraditional learning environment centered on connection, accessibility, and personal expression.

These offerings are designed to meet individuals where they are, creating meaningful opportunities for people of all abilities and backgrounds to engage with art in ways that may not fit within a traditional classroom structure.

Class Format

The classes are designed to prioritize flexibility, engagement, and individual experience over rigid instruction. While sessions may still follow a multi-week format, the emphasis is on exploration rather than progression through a fixed curriculum.

Participants work both individually and collaboratively, with activities designed to encourage creativity, reflection, and interaction. Projects often incorporate multiple mediums, allowing students to experiment with different materials and processes without the pressure of technical mastery. The environment is intentionally adaptable, supporting a wide range of cognitive, physical, and learning needs.

In addition to in-studio classes, Firehouse Art Center extends these programs through outreach initiatives that bring art-making directly into assisted living centers and community spaces, enabling broader access to creative experiences.

Instructors

These programs are led by instructors with experience in adaptive accessibility, community arts, and inclusive teaching practices. In addition to their artistic backgrounds, instructors bring a deep understanding of how to create supportive environments that foster confidence, communication, and personal growth.

Instruction is highly individualized and responsive, with a focus on encouragement, guidance, and meaningful engagement. Instructors facilitate creative exploration while adapting projects and materials to meet each participant’s abilities and interests, ensuring that every student can fully participate in the process.

Studio, Materials, and Approach

Rather than focusing on a single medium, these classes introduce a variety of materials and techniques drawn from across Firehouse’s broader program offerings. Participants may work with paint, clay, textiles, collage materials, or other accessible media, depending on the session and setting.

All materials and tools are selected with accessibility in mind, and instructors provide hands-on support to help participants engage with each process comfortably and safely. The goal is not technical perfection, but meaningful interaction with materials and the creative process itself.

In outreach settings, materials and instruction are adapted to meet the needs of each environment, ensuring that participants can engage fully regardless of mobility or access limitations.

Outcomes

Participants in these programs gain far more than technical skills. Through engagement with a variety of artistic mediums, they develop confidence, communication, and a stronger sense of self-expression. The process of creating, both individually and within a group, supports emotional wellness, social connection, and personal growth.

Students leave with completed works that reflect their experiences and creativity, but just as importantly, they gain a sense of belonging and the understanding that art can be a powerful tool for connection, reflection, and well-being.

Community Connection and Workshops

In addition to ongoing classes, these programs often include special projects, collaborative sessions, and community-centered experiences that bring participants together through shared creative work. These may take the form of short-term workshops, group installations, or themed sessions designed to encourage connection and expression.

A defining part of the program is the annual exhibition of Healing Studio artists in the Firehouse Gallery. This exhibition provides an opportunity for participants to share their work with the broader community, offering recognition, validation, and a sense of accomplishment while highlighting the role of art in supporting health, identity, and inclusion.
