Q&A
How did you get into cosplay?
I don't make things for myself but for my kids. As my skills developed and I had more time, I decided to make fantastic costumes for my kids. I wanted to do things that no one else did and challenge myself.
What inspires you to cosplay a character?
I wanted my kids to have fun with their characters, be proud of whatever they were wearing, and be remembered for what they were.
What advice would you give to someone new to cosplay or wanting to get into it?
Take the time to plan and think about your costume, especially how you will put it on, sit in it, go through doors, and up stairs. Some things look great when you are still, but you'll have to move in them. Try something simple at first and build on your skills. Everything is a learning experience, and it doesn't have to be perfect.
Who are your inspirations for cosplays? Makers, cosplayers, artist?
I don't have a specific person whom I follow, but I get inspiration from many sources. I look at puppetry, parades, Pinterest, and even different cultures. Sometimes, the materials I have make me look for a cosplay to use them with.
What do you do with old cosplay?
Some end up on my porch as Halloween decorations. So far, I've always had something else to try, so we haven't repeated a cosplay.
Whats your favorite cosplay memory? Favorite con?
Since I make things for my kids, I enjoy seeing how people react to their coplays when we go out. Last Halloween, my son, who was 13, went as General Grevious. The costume is about 7' tall. We went to the Bricktown Trick or Treat, and so many people commented with quite colorful language. I had to tell my son that they didn't realize there was a kid inside, and they meant it as compliments.
What are you most excited about in Making Legends:Cosplay Culture?
I love seeing what other people do. I admire all the talent and skills used to make cosplays. I love seeing how people put cosplays together, down to the materials, seams, paint, closures, finishes, all of it. It's all a learning experience and a joy to see all the hard work that comes together to make something you can be proud of and enjoy showing off.
