More about Photography Classes at Firehouse Art Center
Class Format
Courses are typically offered in four- or eight-week sessions, meeting weekly with a combination of instruction, hands-on shooting, and review. Classes are structured to build skills progressively, with each session introducing new concepts that students can apply through practice and project-based work.
Students may spend time both in the classroom and on location, photographing in and around the Norman area to explore different lighting conditions, subjects, and environments. Beginners focus on camera fundamentals and composition, while more experienced students work toward developing a cohesive body of work, often incorporating editing and mixed-media approaches.
Instructors
Photography are led by experienced photographers who bring a mix of technical expertise and creative practice to their instruction. Many instructors have backgrounds in fine art, commercial photography, or digital media, and are actively producing work in their field.
Instruction combines demonstration, guided practice, and constructive critique. Instructors work closely with students to refine their technical skills and creative direction, offering feedback that helps strengthen composition, improve consistency, and build a more intentional approach to image-making.
Equipment, Materials, and Tools
Photography classes are designed to be accessible across a range of equipment. Students are welcome to use DSLR cameras, mirrorless systems, or even smartphones, depending on the course and their level of experience.
Courses introduce key tools and techniques for capturing and editing images, including camera settings, lighting considerations, and digital workflows. Some classes may incorporate editing software or mixed-media processes, with guidance on how to move from raw image to finished work. Instructors provide direction on equipment use, settings, and best practices to help students get the most out of their tools.
Outcomes
By the end of a photography, students will leave with a portfolio of images representative of their technical growth and creative development. They gain a clearer understanding of how to compose, capture, and refine images, along with the ability to make more intentional choices behind the camera.
Students also develop a stronger visual awareness, including learning how to work with light, subject, and environment, while building confidence in their ability to continue photographing and editing independently.

Photography and Digital Media Workshops
Photography workshops are designed around specific skills or creative approaches, allowing students to spend time refining how they shoot, edit, or conceptualize images. These sessions may focus on areas like lighting, composition, or post-processing, providing concentrated practice in a shorter format with an emphasis on real-world application.
Workshops incorporate hands-on shooting and real-time feedback in a condensed and more focus setting and are a great way for beginners and advanced students alike to build confidence, experiment with new techniques, and gain fresh perspective from instructors or visiting artists.
