Since 1970, the Norman Firehouse Art Center, Inc., a non-profit organization, has served Norman and surrounding communities with visual art classes and gallery exhibitions of the highest quality. Our faculty provides instruction in painting and drawing, jewelry construction, fused and slumped glass and more, in well-equipped classrooms.
Position Description
The Studio Tech will work closely with the Studio and Programs Managers in the upkeep and operations of the clay studio including tasks like organizing the studio, mixing glazes, reclaiming clay, loading and unloading kilns, and ensuring a safe work environment. The Studio Tech will also oversee additional studio hours for members and students assisting students and members as needed. They may also assist with classes, workshops, and studio events.
Ideal Candidate
Education & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in studio art, art education, art history, museum studies, or related field is required.
Two years experience in a studio environment
Position Qualifications
Practicing artists with education in studio arts or art education.
Experience with gas kilns is a plus.
Ability to teach studio-based classes at a beginner to intermediate level.
Excellent communication, collaboration, and customer service skills.
Highly organized, adaptable, and able to work independently and within a team environment.
Availability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office
Ability to regularly life and move heavy objects in excess of 50lbs.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Studio and Equipment Maintenance:
Maintaining a clean and organized studio: This includes tasks like cleaning the mixing area, ensuring dry materials are properly stored, and keeping buckets, shelves, and other equipment clean and organized.
Managing inventory: Keeping track of clay, glazes, and other materials, and notifying the manager when supplies are low.
Kiln maintenance and firing: Assisting with loading and unloading kilns, cleaning kiln shelves, and performing basic kiln maintenance.
Equipment maintenance: Ensuring the proper functioning of wheels, mixers, and
other ceramic equipment.
Assisting with Studio Operations:
Supervising open studio hours: Ensuring a safe and productive environment during open studio sessions.
Mixing glazes and slips: Following established recipes to prepare glazes and slips for use.
Testing glazes: Creating test tiles to evaluate the color and texture of glazes.
Assisting with classes and workshops: Providing support to instructors and students.
Recycling clay: Processing clay scraps and trimmings into usable clay.
Providing customer service: Answering questions and providing support to studio members and students.
Assisting with events: Helping with the setup and execution of studio events and
exhibitions.
