Join us in celebrating the amazing talents of BFA students in the School of Visual Arts as their sculptures take over Lions Park! Friday, May 8th from 5:30-8:30 PM.
The Firehouse Art Center, the Norman Arts Council, the Parks and Recreation Department of the City of Norman, and the School of Visual Arts at the University of Oklahoma have partnered to create a dynamic sculpture garden in Lions Park, showcasing the talents of emerging artists. BFA students in the School of Visual Arts are invited to propose public art pieces for this unique project. The students’ concepts are developed with guidance from faculty and visited by the Executive Directors of the Firehouse Art Center and Norman Arts Council, who offer mentorship and feedback throughout the semester. Once the final pieces are selected, they are presented to the Parks and Recreation Department Board of Commissioners for approval.
The chosen sculptures are then fabricated by the students and displayed in Lions Park from late April through the following spring, offering the public an opportunity to experience contemporary art in an outdoor setting. This annual collaboration not only strengthens the connection between students, the local arts community, and the city of Norman but also provides the students with valuable experience in displaying their work in a public space before graduation.
